Bawumia Pays Tribute to Late Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, Urges Dagbon Regent to Preserve Peace

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has paid an emotional tribute to the late Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, while calling on the newly installed Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu, to safeguard the peace and unity that have become the hallmark of the kingdom.

The Bawumia Pays Tribute to Late Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II ceremony took place at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Friday, where traditional leaders, elders, government officials and community members gathered to witness the installation of the new Regent following the passing of the Ya-Na.

Bawumia Recalls Longstanding Relationship with the Late Ya-Na

During his address, delivered in Dagbani, Dr. Bawumia reflected on his longstanding relationship with the late Ya-Na, revealing that their bond began years before the revered traditional ruler ascended to the Dagbon skin.

According to Dr. Bawumia, their relationship started in Savelugu, where the late Ya-Na served as Yoo-Naa, and was built on mutual respect and friendship over the years.

A Campaign Story That Drew Laughter

As part of the Bawumia Pays Tribute to Late Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II address, the former Vice President recounted a memorable encounter during the 2016 election campaign when he visited Savelugu as the NPP’s running mate.

He recalled using a local proverb while seeking the support of the people of Dagbon.

“If a man has two wives, and he only tastes the soup of one wife, how will he know which of them cooks the better soup?”

The remark, which he explained was an appeal for Dagbon to also give the NPP an opportunity to govern, drew laughter from chiefs, elders and dignitaries, including President John Dramani Mahama.

Tribute to a Peacemaker

Beyond the light-hearted moment, Dr. Bawumia described the late Ya-Na as a respected father figure whose wisdom, patience and leadership played a crucial role in strengthening peace and reconciliation in Dagbon following years of conflict.

He said the late traditional ruler’s commitment to unity helped restore stability to the kingdom and left behind a legacy that should be protected for future generations.

Call on the New Regent

Turning his attention to the newly installed Regent, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu, Dr. Bawumia congratulated him on his new responsibility and urged him to continue the peaceful path established by the late Ya-Na.

He appealed to the Regent, traditional authorities and the people of Dagbon to work together to preserve the harmony and unity that have characterised the kingdom in recent years.

Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence that the Regent’s leadership would help sustain the progress made under the late Ya-Na and strengthen the unity of Dagbon for generations to come.
