What to Do If You Fail WASSCE 2026, Options That Still Work in Ghana

I know that feeling. When we were expecting our results, a colleague messaged me at 2pm after checking her WASSCE, “I got F9 in Maths and D7 in English, my life is finished.” And i responded,
“It’s not. Many students with worse results are in Nursing Training and various tertiary institutions. Failing WASSCE does not mean failing life.”
If you saw F9, E8, or D7 in your results today, sit down, breathe, and read this before you make any decision.
First, Check What “Fail” Really Means in Ghana
- If you got C6 or D7 in core subjects (Maths, English, Science): Many universities still accept D7 for some programs. UCC distance, Private universities, Colleges of Education accept D7 in some cases for non-education
- If you got E8 or F9 in 1 or 2 core subjects: You need to rewrite only that subject. Not all 8 subjects.
- If you got F9 in 3 or more subjects: You need proper remedial, not just one month reading.
Don’t listen to people who say “You are not intelligent.” WASSCE marks you on one day’s exam, not your 3 years in SHS.
Option 1: Rewrite as Private Candidate, Nov/Dec 2026 (Best Option for Most)
This is called WASSCE Private or Nov/Dec. Registration starts around March 2026 and exam is in October/November 2026.
- You only register the subjects you failed e.g., just Maths and English. Cost is about GH₵600 – GH₵800 for 2 subjects.
- You can study at home and go and write. No uniform.
- Your best result will be combined, If you had C4 in Science before, you keep it. You only replace the failed one.
- How to register: Go to waecgh.org or any WAEC office in Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast with your old index number.
This is what 80% of students who failed last year did.
Option 2: Go for Remedial School, 3 to 6 Months Intensive
If you failed Maths or Science badly (F9), you need a teacher to explain again. Not YouTube alone.
There many remedial schools across the country, look for the best ones and register. The cost of the registration varies depending on the institution.
Don’t pay any remedial that promises “We will upgrade your results at WAEC office”. That’s scam. You must rewrite.
Option 3: Apply With What You Have, D7 Can Still Get You Admission
I know a boy who got D7 in English, C6 in Maths, B3 in Science in 2024. He thought he failed. He is now in Nursing Training.
- Nursing Training: Requires C6 in English, Maths, Science — but some schools accept D7 in one core if you have good electives. Try it.
- Teacher Training Colleges: Similar, some accept D7 if you apply early.
- Private Universities: Valley View, Central University, Wisconsin accept D7 in English or Maths for Business, IT, Communication.
- Technical Universities: Accra Technical, Kumasi Technical accept D7 for some HND programs.
Don’t wait for perfect results. Apply, then rewrite while in school.
Option 4: Learn a Skill for 6 Months While Waiting
If you are tired of school, use this 6 months before Nov/Dec to learn something that pays.
- Short course in Graphic Design, sewing, barbering and phone repair you can make GH₵50-100 daily while studying.
- This also stops pressure from parents. When you are bringing money home, they stop insulting you for getting F9.
Option 5: Change Your Path, Not Everyone Needs University
In Ghana now, the boys making real money are not always university graduates. If school is really not for you:
- Ghana Armed Forces, Police, Immigration accept WASSCE with D7, E8 you can apply with your current results.
- Vocational Training at NVTI, apprenticeship in catering, electricals and within 1 year, you can start getting small jobs to support yourself.
University is not the only way. Don’t kill yourself because of WASSCE.
What You Should NOT Do
- Don’t pay anyone on WhatsApp “I can change your F9 to B3 at WAEC headquarters“, All those are scammers. WAEC results cannot be changed after release. Students lose money to this fraudsters every year.
- Don’t buy fake certificate. Employers now verify with WAEC.
- Don’t stay at home crying for 1 year. Register for Nov/Dec tomorrow.
If you failed WASSCE 2026, comment below with your results like “I got D7 Maths, E8 English, C6 Science” I will reply and tell you the best option for you personally.
I failed a paper in my school days too. You are not alone. Your result is a setback, not your final story.
