How To Do SHS Self-Placement If You Missed First Placement 2026, CSSPS Guide

Did you check your SHS placement and it says “Not Placed” or “No School Found“? Don’t panic. You are not the only one. This year over 54,985 BECE candidates were not automatically placed due to various issues which could be from the students, teachers, and parents or even ghana education service. The Ghana Education Service has opened the CSSPS Self-Placement Module for you to choose a school yourself.
And good news for 2026: Self-placement is now FREE. You don’t need to buy any scratch card or e-voucher. The Ministry of Education scrapped vouchers this year. Here is exactly how to do it on your phone. Why Were You Not Placed? GES says automatic placement fails if:
- Your aggregate was lower than the cut-off for your 8 chosen schools
- All your boarding choices are full
- You chose only Category A schools (like PRESEC, Achimota, Wey Gey Hey)
- Your programme code didn’t match vacancy
Self-placement lets you pick from schools that still have space.
Requirement for self plaacement
- Your BECE Index Number (10 digits) e.g. 1000123456
- Your Completion Year 2026. So you will enter it as 100012345626 (index + 26)
- Your Date of Birth (for verification)
- Good phone / laptop with internet
No PIN, no e-voucher needed this year.
Step-by-Step: How To Do Self-Placement on cssps.gov.gh
Step 1: Go to Official Portal
Open Chrome and go to www.cssps.gov.gh or directly to sp.cssps.gov.gh for self-placement. Don’t use any other site, scammers have created fake portals.
Step 2: Check first
Click on Check Placement. Enter your Index Number + 26 (e.g., 100012345626). If it says “Not Placed”, you will see a button “Self-Placement”, Click.
Step 3: Login to self-placement module
You will be taken to sp.cssps.gov.gh
Enter Index Number + Year and your Date of Birth.
Step 4: Select your region
Choose the region you want to go to school. Tip: Don’t choose only Greater Accra and Ashanti schools in this region get full fast. If you want boarding quickly, try any other region feel comfortable for you. There might more vacancies.
Step 5: Select residential preference
Choose Day or Boarding.
If you choose Day, choose a school near your house. GES advises max 1-hour travel which is commonly refer to as catchment area.
Step 6: Select school and programme
This is the most important. The portal will show you ONLY schools with vacancies based on your aggregate. You cannot type any school you want.
- Click on a school from the list
- Select programme e.g., General Arts, Home Economics, Technical, Visual Arts, Science
- Make sure the programme is available, Not all schools offer Science.
Step 7: Review and confirm
Check well:
- Region
- School
- Residential (Day/Boarding)
- Programme
Once you click Confirm, it is locked. You cannot change again. So check well. After confirmation, Download and Print your placement slip. You will need it for reporting.
Reporting Date for Self-Placed Students
For 2026, all SHS 1 students are to report on September 18, 2026. Go with:
- Printed placement slip
- BECE results slip
- Birth certificate
Important warning
- Self-placement is first-come, first-served. The earlier you do it, the better school you get. Don’t wait 3 days.
- If someone on WhatsApp says “Pay me GH₵500, I will place you in PRESEC”, it’s a SCAM. Nobody can place you outside the CSSPS portal. All placement is computer.
- You can try multiple times BEFORE you confirm. If you don’t like the schools you see, you can log out and log in again later, new schools may appear.
- For help, go to GES District Office or GNAT Hall Accra, don’t pay agents.
