AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine Awards Tertiary Scholarships to 30 Students

AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has awarded tertiary scholarships to 30 brilliant but needy students from its host communities as part of efforts to expand access to higher education and promote human capital development.
The awards were presented under the second rollout of the mine’s Community Scholarship Support Scheme, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 50 since the programme was introduced. The latest beneficiaries join an initial cohort of 20 students who received support during the first phase of the initiative.
The scholarship package covers the beneficiaries’ educational expenses for the duration of their respective academic programmes. In addition to the financial assistance, each beneficiary received a laptop and a backpack to support their academic work and enhance their learning experience.
The initiative forms part of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine’s broader commitment to creating sustainable opportunities for young people through education and skills development. It also aligns with the mine’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan, which focuses on human capital development, improved access to education and long-term socio-economic growth in its host communities.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, the Director of Sustainability Management, Edmund Oduro Agyei, reaffirmed the mine’s commitment to education as a key pillar of its 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan.
He explained that the scholarship programme complements the mine’s broader efforts to improve access to tertiary education, including its contribution to establishing the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Obuasi Campus to bring higher education opportunities closer to students.
The Provost of the College of Health Sciences at KNUST, Rev. Professor Phillip Antwi-Agyei, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, commended AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine for its continued investment in education.
He encouraged the beneficiaries to remain committed to their academic pursuits and challenged them to become future problem-solvers and ambassadors of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.
The scholarship recipients expressed gratitude to the mine for the support, describing the initiative as a significant investment in their academic aspirations and future careers. They noted that the financial assistance would ease the burden of tertiary education and allow them to concentrate fully on their studies.
Through the continued implementation of its Community Scholarship Support Scheme, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine is reinforcing its commitment to empowering young people, strengthening educational opportunities and contributing to sustainable development within its host communities.
