Kenneth Gilbert Adjei Officially Takes Charge as Defence Minister

Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has officially assumed office as Ghana’s new Minister for Defence, beginning his tenure with a formal welcome at the Ministry of Defence on Monday, August 17, 2026.
The newly appointed minister was received at the Ministry with a Guard of Honour as he formally commenced his duties in charge of Ghana’s defence sector.
Following the ceremony, Mr. Adjei interacted with senior management and staff of the Ministry, including Chief Director Emmanuel Kartey, Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, and the various Service Chiefs.
The engagement gave the new minister an opportunity to meet key officials and familiarise himself with the leadership structure of the Ministry as he begins his responsibilities.
New leadership at Defence Ministry
Mr. Adjei’s assumption of office comes at a significant time for Ghana’s defence and national security architecture, with expectations for strong coordination between the Ministry, the Ghana Armed Forces and other relevant security stakeholders.
The Ministry has expressed its readiness to work with the new minister as he takes charge of the institution and advances its mandate.
His responsibilities will include providing political leadership to the Defence Ministry while working with the military leadership on matters concerning national defence, security and the operational needs of the Ghana Armed Forces.
From Works and Housing to Defence
Before his appointment as Defence Minister, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei served as deputy minister for defence under President John Dramani Mahama 2015 to 2017.
President Mahama appointed him Defence Minister in August 2026, following a change in the leadership of the ministry. His transition therefore places him at the centre of a portfolio that requires close collaboration with military commanders, government officials and other national security institutions.
What lies ahead?
As he settles into the new position, attention will be on the priorities Mr. Adjei sets for the Defence Ministry and how effectively he works with the Ghana Armed Forces.
The new minister is expected to engage with the Ministry’s management, the Service Chiefs and other stakeholders as he familiarises himself with the sector.
His assumption of office marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Ministry of Defence under his leadership.
