Weija-Gbawe MP Urges Government to Fix Mallam-Weija Road as Traffic Delays Worsen

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on the government to urgently rehabilitate the Mallam-Weija stretch of the Accra-Kasoa Highway, warning that the deteriorating road conditions and delayed drainage projects are causing severe traffic congestion.
Speaking in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Shaib said commuters travelling from Kasoa and other parts of the Central Region into Accra are spending as much as four hours on a journey that should ordinarily take a fraction of that time.
According to the MP, the situation has become increasingly difficult for motorists, particularly along the Atala, Weija Junction and Mallam Junction corridor, where poor road conditions and ongoing drainage construction continue to slow traffic.
Sometimes it takes more than three hours just to pass by,” Mr. Shaib said, describing the daily experience of thousands of commuters using the highway.
He attributed much of the congestion to the slow progress of an ongoing storm drainage project in the area. While acknowledging that government officials have visited the site on several occasions, he expressed concern over the pace of work.
Mr. Shaib disclosed that he has repeatedly engaged the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources to accelerate the project but believes challenges such as funding or resource constraints may be affecting the contractor’s ability to complete the work on schedule.
He stressed that completing the drainage infrastructure and repairing the damaged sections of the highway would significantly improve traffic flow, reduce travel time and help minimize flooding during the rainy season.
The Accra-Kasoa Highway remains one of Ghana’s busiest transport corridors, serving thousands of commuters each day. However, frequent congestion, deteriorating road surfaces and seasonal flooding continue to pose major challenges for residents, businesses and motorists.
The MP is therefore urging the government and the relevant agencies to prioritize the completion of the drainage project and undertake immediate repairs to restore smooth movement along the highway.
