Geely Founder Li Shufu Steps Down as Chairman

Chinese billionaire and Geely founder Li Shufu, also known as Eric Li, is stepping down as chairman of Geely Automobile Holdings as the company begins a major management reshuffle and succession process.

Li will be succeeded as chairman of the listed automaker by An Conghui, a long-serving Geely executive. At the same time, Gan Jiayue will replace Gui Shengyue as chief executive officer, while Gui is expected to become vice chairman.

Li Shufu to Remain Chairman of Geely Holding

Although Li is leaving the chairmanship of Geely Automobile, he is not leaving the wider Geely group.

He will remain chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the privately held parent company behind Geely’s wider automotive operations. This will allow him to concentrate on the broader group and its future direction while handing day-to-day leadership of the listed automaker to a new generation of executives.

Geely’s own corporate information identifies Li as the company’s founder, controlling shareholder and chairman of Geely Holding.

A Planned Leadership Transition

The change is part of a broader effort to establish a more systematic management structure and prepare Geely for long-term succession.

Reuters reported that the restructuring is intended to move the company away from a family-centred management model towards a more professional and systematic organisational structure.

The leadership changes come as Geely seeks to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive Chinese automobile market while expanding internationally.

Geely’s Growing Global Ambitions

Geely has expanded well beyond its original Chinese automobile business and now has interests across the global automotive industry.

Its portfolio includes brands such as Volvo Cars, Lotus, Zeekr and Lynk & Co, while the group also has interests connected to other international automotive companies.

The company has also been increasing its focus on overseas markets. Reuters reported that Geely has set an ambition for roughly two-thirds of its sales to come from outside China as it looks to strengthen its international presence.

Leadership Change Comes Amid EV Competition

The transition comes at a time when China’s automobile industry is facing intense competition, particularly in electric vehicles.

Geely is competing with major Chinese manufacturers including BYD as companies attempt to gain greater market share at home and abroad.

Geely has been responding by consolidating parts of its business and concentrating resources around its core listed platform. Li previously outlined plans to close, suspend, merge or restructure redundant entities as part of the company’s broader “One Geely” strategy.

Li Shufu’s Role in Building Geely

Li founded Geely in the 1980s and transformed the business from its early manufacturing activities into a major automotive group.

Under his leadership, Geely expanded internationally, including its acquisition of Volvo Cars from Ford in 2010. The group has since developed a broad portfolio of automotive brands and investments.

Forbes currently lists Li Shufu as a self-made billionaire whose wealth is primarily associated with automobiles.

What the Change Means for Geely

Li’s departure from the chairman’s position at Geely Automobile marks an important leadership transition for one of China’s major automakers.

However, his continued role as chairman of Geely Holding means he will remain closely involved with the wider group.

The immediate focus will now be on how the new management team executes Geely’s plans for international expansion, business consolidation and competition in the rapidly changing global electric vehicle market.
